Plumbing as a Calling

"...An excellent plumber is infinitely more admirable than an incompetent philosopher. That Society scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water."

-John Gardner, Excellence, 1961

Our wall of awards
Life is too precious to endanger it by entrusting plumbing to hands other than those best qualified to assure health protection ... the master plumbers. - Henry W. Reed, Chairman of the Board, American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Corporation

"The annual 'Henri X. Billharz Award' is the most prestigious and valued honor in our area." - Buster Sabba, Woodside Herald

Our First Generation

In 1927, Henri X. Billharz started Billharz Plumbing after he received his Master Plumbers Lic # 9914. In 1947, he was founder and first president of the Sunnyside Kiwanis Club. Henri led the club and the division with dedication and concern for those less fortunate. He led with gentle conviction that each member and each project was of singular importance.

Henri and other distinguished community members started the Sunnyside Savings and Loan Association. During his tenure as Chairman of the Board, the name was changed to Financial Federal and later bought by the Dime Savings Bank of Williamsburgh. Henri was President of the Queens County Grand Jurors Association, President of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, a state officer in the NY State Master Plumbers Association, and a member of the Astoria Lodge F & A.M and the Elks Club. Henri X. always said that a man's "wealth was his family." He and his wife Martha raised three children and he was blessed with living to see and know all of his 10 grandchildren.

The Henri X. Billharz Founders Award is given every year to honor the memory of a man who served his fellow man with honesty and energy and compassion. But most of all, Henri served with the pure conviction that each of us can make a difference.

Our Second Generation

Robert H. Billharz is a licensed plumber (#437) and the owner of Billharz Plumbing, Inc., since 1978. Bob is one of the very few plumbers in the City of New York who has passed all qualifying tests twice: the first time the city disputed his 10 year's experience (which was required to be licensed) by 6 months. Although then-Senator Frank Padavan appeared in court to support his application, Bob retook all the tests and passed. He was then awarded his license from the first application!

Bob has continued his education to keep abreast and expand his proficiency in new technical advancements. He is known throughout Queens as an honest and trustworthy expert in all phases of industrial, commercial and residential plumbing and gas heating. Bob was Master (president) of his Masonic Lodge in 1977 and again in 1985. The Masons are the oldest fraternal service organization in the world. Bob has also served as an officer in the Queens County Association of Master Plumbers. Bob is a very well-liked tradesman in the area, known for his personal kindness to all.

Henri is a member of the Master Plumbers Association and has received his Master Plumbers Lic # 1986. Henri brought new technology to our company by creating our new computer based systems.

Behind the scenes Joanne M. Billharz is Corporate Secretary and Treasurer, Dianna Billharz-Leon is Office Manager, Nicole Iamunno Billharz handles customer service and Dawn Billharz Fischetti works on special projects.
